Lauren Winner‘s memoir Girl Meets God explores her conversion from being an orthodox Jewish girl to the Christian faith. However, even more deeply Winner’s story draws attention to those in the faith who have sacrificed much to become a follower of Jesus. Her memoir takes readers through a year of this journey as she weaves together vivid narratives detailing her story.
One chapter that I loved is titled “Reading Ruth” where Winner gives insight into how we as followers of Jesus often must leave much behind to follow Him. She writes, “Jesus is the needle who sews the children of God who are not direct descendants of Abraham into that nighttime sky” (248). This insight is an interesting play on words, identifying all who desire to follow Jesus to be woven into His promise.
